The Lancet Neurology Autoimmune Disorder Conference

Vanda Lennon, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN, USA

Vanda LennonDr Lennon is the Dorothy A. Adair Professor in the departments of immunology, neurology and laboratory medicine and pathology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN, USA. After graduating from Sydney University Medical School (Australia), Dr Lennon trained in internal medicine at McGill University (Canada), completed a PhD in immunology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (University of Melbourne, Australia), and spent the next 6 years combining immunobiology and neurobiology research as Assistant and Associate Professor at the Salk Institute (San Diego, CA). In 1978, she established the neuroimmunology research laboratory at Mayo Clinic and, in 1981, the clinical neuroimmunology laboratory in the department of laboratory medicine and pathology, thus ensuring the clinical relevance of her research programme.

In 2005, she established Mayo Clinic’s autoimmune neurology fellowship programme to bridge the departments of neurology, immunology, and laboratory medicine and pathology. Three decades of integrated clinical and basic research activities have yielded significant insights into the immunobiological basis of autoimmune neurological disorders affecting the peripheral somatic, autonomic, enteric and central nervous systems. The breadth of her research programme reflects recognition that cancer is an important initiator of neurological autoimmunity. Plasma membrane channels and neurotransmitter receptors expressed in neurons, glia, muscle, and cancer cells remain the research programme’s consistent focus. The clinical dividends include diagnostic and prognostic serological tests and innovative therapeutic options for autoimmune neurological disorders encompassing sensory, motor, autonomic, inflammatory demyelinating, movement, and behavioral disorders, some of which have traditionally been considered degenerative.
