The Lancet Neurology Autoimmune Disorder Conference

External Conference Chair

Francesc Graus, University of Barcelona and IDIBAPS, Spain

Dr Francesc Graus received his MD and PhD from the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona. He completed residency training in neurology at Hospital Bellvitge of Hospitalet, Barcelona, and a fellowship in neuro-oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 1986, he joined the neurology faculty at Hospital Clinic in Barcelona and was named Chief of Service in 2006.

Dr Graus coordinates the neuroimmunology programme of Institut d’Investigació Biomèdica August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), the research centre affiliated to Hospital Clinic.  His research is focused on the clinical and immunological characterisation of paraneoplastic neurological syndromes. Dr Graus led the panel of experts that defined for the first time strict criteria for the diagnosis of these disorders. His research confirmed the hypothesis that the underlying tumour triggers the autoimmune response resulting in neurological dysfunction, and he identified the Hu, Tr, and Sox1 autoantibodies that are now widely used for the diagnosis of these syndromes. Dr Graus’ work has been funded by the Ministry of Health (Spain), Fundació La Marató de TV3 (Catalonia) and the European Commission. He has contributed to numerous textbooks and has published in leading journals including, among others, The Lancet Neurology, Brain, and Annals of Neurology
