Josep Dalmau, University of Pennsylvania, USA and University of Barcelona, IDIBAPS, and ICREA, Spain

Dr Josep Dalmau received his MD and PhD from the Autonoma University of Barcelona, Spain.  He trained in Neurooncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and afterwards was appointed to the faculty. After 11 years at Memorial, Dr Dalmau took a position as co-director of neurooncology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. In 2002, he moved to the Department of Neurology and Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania where he became a professor of neurology.

Dr Dalmau is currently Research Professor at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) in IDIBAPS/Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona, Adjunct Professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania, and Guest Researcher at the National Institute of Health (NIH, USA). His research is funded by the USA NIH, the Spanish Health Institute (FIS), and the Foundation Marató TV3 Catalunya. He has also been funded by the Charles A Dana Foundation, the McKnight Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Dalmau has contributed to several textbooks and has published over 250 manuscripts in leading journals. He has received many awards including the distinguished George W Jacoby award of the American Neurological Association.  His current research is focused on autoimmune encephalitis and paraneoplastic neurological disorders. His recent work has revealed a new category of disorders mediated by antibodies to the neuronal cell surface and CNS synaptic proteins, including among others the NMDA, AMPA, and GABA receptors.
